The Expedition waiver? Signed. That slick “Patchwork” skin? Equipped. The crushing reminder that you need to rebuild your Gunsmith bench from level zero? Painful and fresh.
For those of us who recently stared at our maxed-out hideouts, took a deep breath, and clicked that reset button for the Expedition event, reality hits hard. That brief moment of freedom evaporates the instant you attempt to craft anything worthwhile. The barrier? Rusted Gears. These components were a headache during your first playthrough, but your brain mercifully suppressed those memories. Now you’re desperately combing industrial sectors and coming up empty-handed.
Let’s address the elephant in the room: Rusted Gears are frustratingly scarce in a game world drowning in rusted infrastructure. Premium blueprints like the Volcano drop more frequently than these basic mechanical components. Fortunately, I’ve identified a farming route that consistently delivers results, so you can stop wandering aimlessly through trash heaps.
Table of Contents
The Buried City Route
Skip the generic industrial locations entirely. Your destination is Buried City, particularly the Northwest quadrant. This zone is mechanical salvage paradise.
Focus exclusively on Cars and Generators. These containers hold Rusted Gears, but there’s a catch you must breach them. Without upgraded breaching skills, expect a painfully sluggish process that broadcasts your position, but there’s no alternative method.
The “Generator & Car” Loop
A precise farming circuit exists that dramatically improves your success rate. Following this path, I’ve consistently extracted two to three gears per run a massive improvement over random scavenging.
Begin at the northwest Warehouse. Ignore the basic storage units; concentrate on industrial equipment instead. Head toward the building’s eastern perimeter where two generators sit adjacent to each other. These particular units demonstrate an unusually favorable gear drop rate. Breach both immediately.
Proceed to Marano Station next. Bypass the ticket counters completely; your objective is the northern car park. This area offers exceptional loot potential. Systematically breach every vehicle hood you encounter. The animation leaves you vulnerable and the process feels monotonous, but car engines provide your strongest odds for gear drops.
If your haul remains insufficient, conclude at the nearby Parking Garage. The strategy remains identical: locate generators and vehicles, breach them methodically, and collect your rewards.
The Secret Dam Spot (If You Dare)
When Buried City becomes too contested, an underutilized alternative exists on the Dam Battlegrounds map. Navigate to the North Exit, specifically the Elevator Exit vicinity. A collection of buses awaits there.
Surprisingly, breaching these buses yields an abnormally high Rusted Gear spawn rate compared to standard vehicles. The location carries inherent danger since elevator zones attract campers, but if you spawn nearby, inspect these buses before extraction. One player documented collecting three gears from a single visit to this spot alone.
Why You Are Struggling
Your search likely fails because you’re scanning generic “industrial” zones rather than targeting precise container types. Rusted Gears rarely appear as loose loot on surfaces; they’re concealed within formerly operational machinery.
After filling your inventory, the extraction point conveniently sits adjacent to the metro station, allowing quick evacuation before hostile squads arrive to claim your scavenged materials. Best of luck reconstructing that workbench. You’ll need every bit of it.
